The Gentle Shepherd (published 1725) is the first Scottish opera. Written by 18th century poet Allan Ramsay, the story is set in the Scottish Lowlands just outside of Edinburgh, and follows the story of two shepherd couples: Patie (the Gentle Shepherd) and Peggy, and Jenny and Roger.
