July 2015 commemorated the 100th anniversary of the 844 lives that were lost in the Eastland disaster— the largest loss of lives from a single shipwreck on the Great Lakes. With the recent passing of the last known survivor of this maritime tragedy, there is greater responsibility to tell the story of this important piece of Chicago history. Members of the Eastland Disaster Historical Society combine captivating images with compelling firsthand accounts from families of survivors, victims, and others directly affected by this monumental local tragedy.
