In 1964, filmmaker Jacques Demy's "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg", a pastel-colored, 100%-sung musical starred Catherine Deneuve. Demy and his composer, Michel Legrand, developed a companion piece, the film, "The Young Girls of Rochefort” in 1967. It was more glamourous with bigger, more complex musical numbers interspersed within its story of sisters looking for love.
