In Sept. 1914 in German East Africa, the British missionary Reverend Samuel Sayer (Robert Morely) and his maiden sister, Rose (Katherine Hepburn) are burnt out by the Germans. Samuel, bereft, has died. The well-educated and prudish Rose is left behind. All is not lost, because just in time Charlie Allnut (Humphrey Bogart) arrives in his rickety and decrepit steamboat, the “African Queen.”
