Inspired by the L’Affichomania exhibition, this winter book club delves into the life of Sarah Bernhardt, the daughter of a courtesan who transformed herself into one of the most famous stage actresses who ever lived, as well as a national icon of France. Marissa Fenley, University of Chicago, Dept. of English Language and Literature, PhD Candidate will lead a discussion on Bernhardt’s celebrity, her avant-garde performance style, and its influence on the culture of the period.
