Explore the deep symbolism imbedded in Christian and Catholic art. This course examines motifs and allegories developed in the early years of the Church, as well as those that evolved with the rise of the Gothic Cathedrals in the 13 to 15th centuries. After the Reformation, many of these iconographic systems fell out of favor, but can still be understood and appreciated today. The class begins with the art of the catacombs, continues with medieval imagery and closes with the attributes of the saints.
