Philip Caputo, an award-winning novelist, journalist and screenwriter set out in his truck in 2011 on a transcontinental adventure that took him from Key West, Fla., to Dead Horse, Alaska. Joined by his wife, two dogs and a trailer, Caputo sought to uncover the common things that unite a nation as expansive and diverse as the United States, as well as the forces that still divide it. In his new memoir "The Longest Road," Caputo thoughtfully discusses what he discovered along the way and he shares his thoughts with Tribune literary editor Elizabeth Taylor.
