As many as 250,000 homeless children were loaded onto trains in New York City during the years of 1854–1929. These children were dropped into unfamiliar rural settings, and offered to farm families for adoption. Author Clark Kidder tells the Dickensian story of his late grandmother, Emily Reese Kidder, who rode an orphan train to her destiny.
