Painters now had competition. While the camera could depict reality much better, the painter could concentrate on color and light. For Monet, the result was "Impressionism" and the critics hated it! Debussy had the same problem determining what to do after Wagner. His solution was to make his music sound like a Monet painting looks. The works of Monet and Debussy resulted in gorgeous art. But beware ... the floodgates to the 20th century were about to open.
