The Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva (UUSG) presents a history on the life of its founder as part of its 175th anniversary celebration. The founding minister of the oldest church in Geneva, Augustus Conant, served in the 19th Illinois regiment from 1861-1863. Conant, a devoted pacifist, chose to join the Union army because he believed slavery was an evil far greater than war. UUSG member Kevin O’Neill has researched Conant’s service as an army chaplain and medic.
