Vilhelm Moberg was the youngest child in a family in Småland. His brothers and sister emigrated to America when they were 14. Hard times occur when his father passes away. Moberg honors his father’s wish and remains in Sweden to care for his mother. Moberg describes the struggle of those who remained behind: working at age 8 in a glass factory, poverty, alcoholism, the rise of socialism, and the pull to America to achieve a better life. Check out this fascinating peek into Swedish life beginning in 1885.
