On the eve of Bastille Day, we remember the last moment of the French aristocracy before the Revolution with a thoroughly contemporary version of Marie-Antoinette’s life as the Paris Hilton of the House of Bourbon. Only director Sofia Coppola could get away such an oblique and anachronistic point of view, shifting the balance away from realism and into an act of empathy for a girl swept up by events that leave her without personal choices.
