Norway had not been a "player" in the music of Europe in its entire history. Isolated from the European continent geographically, it was also isolated internally; its people were trapped in the valleys between mountains without roads to connect them. Grieg made the monumental decision to give his country a voice, and as it turned out, it was very unique. But all did not turn out well for the composer, and his story is tragic.
