Jim Garrison, a professor of philosophy of education at Virginia Tech University, and Larry Hickman, director of the Center for Dewey Studies at Southern Illinois University, discuss the book they co-authored with the president of Soka Gakkai International, Daisaku Ikeda, about the link between education and daily life. Come before the lecture, at 6:30 p.m., for Buddhist prayers for peace. Free parking is available. "'Living as Learning' seeks to revive the creative, humanistic and social dimensions of teaching and learning, offering new ways to address the challenges currently facing public education," according to promotional materials. "Based on the pragmatism of Dewey and the value-creating philosophy of Soka education developed by Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, the book offers guidance for manifesting our shared potential for harmonious and joyful living in a diverse world."
