Beginning shortly after the outset of the 1789 French Revolution, Beethoven began work on setting to music Schiller's Ode to Joy. But life intervened: deafness, Napoleon's betrayal, and loss of friends and income. However, he persisted working for over nearly 30 years. Completely revolutionary in its construction, Greg Athnos will demonstrate you that one can only understand this composition by overlaying a picture of the events leading up to the storming of the Bastille.
