Hugo's Frog Bar: User Reviews
I took my friend to Hugo's for her birthday on Wednesday 9/3/08. I didn't catch our servers name but he was awesome! Our drinks were never empty. He was very knowledgeable on the menu and made suggestions on half portion side items. He upselled appetizers, drinks, and dessert. For her birthday the servers came out and sang a happy birthday jingle for her. As other guests were leaving they stopped by to wish my friend a happy birthday. My fondest memory was a table of two ladies were having dinner, and it appeared one of them was a little cold. The server or busser went and got her a hugo's server coat and put it around her. That is anticipating the guests needs. I was very impressed.
The only thing I didn't care for was the size of the restaurant. The tables where we were seated, in the front of the restaurant was on top of each other, but thankfully it wasn't that crowded.
I can't say enough about Hugo's. I will definitely return. It was everything I heard it would be. FANTASTIC

i cant believe all the bad reviews some lunatics have given this place. i had dinner there with 2 firends last nite8-7-08,wasnt very hungry , yet i devoured a crab cake as voluptuous as bette midler, a fantastic bowl of shrimp bisque that would have made seinfeld forget about the soup nazi and a scallop salad that would bring tears to your eyes. i forgot what my firends ordered. i was to preoccupied with my own merchandise. and for desert we split a single order of lemon meringue pie 3 ways and could barely finish it. the portions here are just legendary. THIS PLACE IS HARD TO BEAT. only joe's stone crab is in the same league. to not like this place u would have to be NUTS.

My sister and I went to Hugos' and sat outside, which was awesome (I recommend it if weather permits). The tables outside are very small and close to eachother, so it's a little cramped, but it was very nice. We had the Oysters Rockefeller appetizer which was amazing, but the rest of the food was just average - I expected the steaks to blow me away since this place is owned by Gibson's, but I had Sirloin & Crab Legs and they were nothing spectacular. My sister had fish, which was just ok too. The service was not impressive either, but we did get everything promptly (drinks, etc.). If you're deciding between the two, go to Gibsons.

I am not originally from Chicago, however, was told to bring a friend from out of town to this restaurant because we had some money to spend. My friend and I have been to several steakhouses and seafood restaurants in the past several years across the country and this place is by far the worst. Positive thought first - service was great. The negatives - food was not worth the cost. Steak was well prepared, however had no flavor. Seafood was mediocre and the item that we wanted on the menu was not available. Perhaps the issue was our expectations were too high, however I feel that most restaurants that I have had similar expectations for have met the mark. I will not return to Hugo's or Gibson's again nor would I recommend it, however I wish the best to all of you who choose to visit and hope that your experience is better than mine.

We went to Hugo's Frog Bar on Rush and it was a disappointment. The wait staff was friendly, but somewhat slow and not very knowledgable about the menu. The crab cake had nice chunks of crab, but wasn't blended well with large chunks of breading interspersed with the crab. The hot pink mayo was tasty, but the crab cake itself was bland and parts of it were mushy. The blackened salmon sandwich also lacked flavor and the fries were nothing special. The eggs benedict were ok, but the hash browns had an unpleasant taste from the oil. The coleslaw also lacked seasoning and was too mushy. The highlight of the meal was the salad with bleu cheese dressing which was homemade. Overall, the restaurant was nothing special and there are several other places to go for lunch (Capital Grille, Tavern on Rush) where the quality of food, service and value are far better than Hugo's Frog Bar.

We went to Hugo's on a busy Saturday night. The food was good and nicely prepared. The service, however, made the night memorable for all the wrong reasons. First, we had to wait 45 minutes for our reservation in the packed beyond comfortable capacity bar. Then during our meal, I was bumped by waitstaff so many times without any apologies that I complained to my waitress who responded, "I know. That happens a lot." If it's a problem, fix it. A final straw was when my wife asked the host where the restroom was. He didn't even stop walking away from her to answer the question before his voice was lost in the din of the overcrowed restaurant. Overall, we felt that we were more of a burden to the host and waitstaff than guests. There are so many places for good seafood where you're not charged such a high price for such insultinly negligent service.

We loved the food here--and yes we braved the frog legs. They are actually really good. But the atmosphere reallt takes the cake. It makes me think of what 'old chicago' must have been like. I highly recommend this establishment.
Report This Reviewwe have been to hugo's twice in our 3 mos stay here in chicago. we have had wonderful experiences both times. the staff, the food, the whole general buzz to the place made for a real dining experience. we only wish there were places like this and gibson's in london. go and enjoy!!!
Report This ReviewI went to Hugo's with a group for Mother's Day. The restaurant was crazy busy and not where I would go for an intimate dinner. That being said, the food was incredible. We were in the very back room close to the kitchen. Noise was high but our waitress was awesome. She was very funny and professional at the same time. Never had a server be so honest and helpful. Next time family comes to town I will bring them to Hugo's! Lots of fun and very tasty!
Report This ReviewMy favorite restaurant in the city! I've been here a handful of times, and it never fails to impress. The seafood is so fresh, and the desserts are FANTASTIC (you have to share them since they are so giant), especially the Muddy Bottom Pie. Hugo's is the first place I recommend to out-of-town guests. The service, atmosphere, food & drinks are great!
