Waveland Bowl
3700 N. Western Ave. - ChicagoWhere else can you bowl at 5 a.m.? There may be other places but, according to those who have been to Waveland Bowl in the wee hours, none as hip. Teens, punks, families--Waveland gets them all. A huge hall with 40 lanes, Waveland gets quite loud when busy. All rates are hourly and include the price of shoe rental.

Lincoln Ave. - ChicagoOne of Chicago's oddities--a second-floor bowling alley--Lincoln Square Lanes sits atop a hardware store, and comes complete with a pressed tin ceiling as well as a balcony for viewing bowling games in progress. Open bowling is available at a mere $4 a game and shoe rental is only $3. Beer is also reasonably priced. The bar has booths and large windows for observing the games. Leagues run from September through May, so call ahead for open bowling during these months.
Fireside Bowl
2646-48 W. Fullerton Ave. - ChicagoAfter 10 years of hosting rock and punk shows, Fireside Bowl has gone back to being a bowling alley ($15-$20/hour). Open bowl is available daily, but call to check when leagues are in session.

6750 S. Pulaski Rd. - ChicagoLawn Bowling is one of the few places in the West Lawn community open well into the night that isn't a bar. There is a lounge, of course, but there is also bowling. The alley offers open bowling as well as leagues (call for specifics) for men, women, kids ... everyone! Bowling is an activity that is fun for all ages. There are special rates for children, so it is a great place for the whole family. Lawn Bowling even has accommodations for blind bowlers. The lounge offers a place to watch the Bulls, Blackhawks and Bears (in season, of course) while you sit back and relax with a drink.
Habetler Bowl
5250 N. Northwest Hwy. - ChicagoThis family-owned bowling alley has been drawing keglers since it opened in 1957. Both league and non-league bowlers polish their games on the 32 lanes at Habetler's, where only a few concessions have been made to the changing times. "We did start the Rock-and-Glow Night to reach the 13- to 18-year-olds,'' said Bill Habetler, whose father and grandfather owned and operated the bowling alley before him. "The kids don't just want to bowl. They want the rock music and the disco lights.'' But people of all ages--including seniors--are regular bowlers. Habetler's also has video games, a bar and a snack shop.
Halsted Bowl
12345 S. Halsted St. - ChicagoThis cozy, 18-lane bowling alley is a family destination for residents on the Far South Side. The place also contains a lounge and snack shop. Besides bowling, there are darts, pool and video games.
Be sure to call and ask when each alley hosts open as many spots cater to leagues and private parties.
