decent food and bar but a bit pretentious

feels like being in the city; eclectic ambiance; very decent food and bar selections...the down side? filled with hummer-driving, cigar- smoking, golf-obsessed, "Lake Forest" wannabees.... and the beer snobs.........................

Went there for lunch yesterday and just loved everything we had. Unfortunately for my diet, the french fries were fantastic! I don't know how they make them but the were perfect. I wish they were closer to Glenview, I would go often.

Amazing beer bar. Right...
By Allen from Chicago, IL, August 31, 2007

Amazing beer bar. Right near the train so that was a big plus. A Chicago neighborhoody feel to it with very cool decor, blues music was playing and no t.v.'s which was different. Sat at the bar and all the beers were written on chalkboards but it would have been nice to have a printed menu. The bartender was very knowledgable which was great because of so many unique and hard to find beers on draft. A rare treat. Everything I had was served in its own unique glass which was also a bonus. About 27 or so on draft including Chimay. I missed the Emmetts cask but had the Hop Juice on cask instead and some La Trappe Quad. They have 2 cask handpumps! I saw they had softshell crab available and the menu looked suprisingly good for a beer bar but this was a beer only day. I'd totally take the train up again because driving after this place would be a bad idea.

If you are in downtown Libertyville, or anywhere near for that matter and you miss the Firkin, then you are missing a great time. The Firkin features over 25 draught beer selections and a great variety of Belgium bottles as well.
The food is unique and has a really cool style; fresh fish, seasonal items, vegetarian entrees, etc. The monthly specials are great! Live music every Tuesday and Thursday. And the staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

We love this place for a casual dinner out and a beer. The beer list is wonderful and the wait staff is very knowledgable if you are not sure what beer to try. The food is yummy but I wish they would change the menu!! I think a few things can go and new things added once in awhile to change it up a bit. Otherwise, fun place for a quick date night! Love the colored lights that hang year round!

A favorite for beer drinkers...
By Bradley7 from Mundelein, IL, July 4, 2007

A favorite for beer drinkers in and around Libertyville, and a place I've been enjoying for more than five years now. They have a huge selection of beer that you can't find anywhere in the area (unless you go downtown or out to Paletine). Besides the libations, I have never been disappointed by anything I've eaten; more often, I have been amazed by the level of boldness and invention they achieve in the all-too-vanilla northern suburbs.
The decor is eclectic, seeming to be layers upon layers of styles and mediums. There always seems to bee different kind of hanging lights, combinations of strings of x-mas lights and hanging fixtures.
The service has always been friendly, and everyone who works here seems to know their beer and their food very well.
Some of my favorite foods: Fried Asparagus, Calamari, Hot Caribbean Sandwich, Grilled Red Peppers, Spicy Chicken Salad

Fun food, snappy music, & friendly service await you at The Firkin. We go to enjoy live music on Tuesday & Thursday evenings. Try to get there early to have some tasty eats, you'll beat the crowds and get keep your seats. With such a diverse menu, we can always find a bite to eat no matter what our food mood is. If you're looking for some unique beers chances are, Firkin has served them or they are currently on one of their 25 plus draft handles. Okay so beer may not be your "thing," how about stopping in to fully experience thier Premium Tequillas or Vodkas. Firkin is a big hit and well worth the trip.
