from Carol's Pub goes back to the days when country music--and Uptown--belonged mostly to hillbillies. The dark, starkly furnished tavern was founded in 1973 and endures, according to one waitress, because it offers "Southern hospitality, hon." On week nights, the locals hold darts tournaments among themselves and on the weekends, the house band rules. The crowd is "a lot of Southern people," owner Carol Harris said. "They moved away and they come back." The staff hails from such states as Kentucky, West Virginia, Georgia and Alabama. "I'm not particular who I hire," Harris explained. "I guess because it was a Southern place, they came here looking for work."
