New Line Tavern

Need a late-night drink and bite in the West Loop? Steve Soble, who's brought you trusty bars such as Daily Bar & Grill and Southport Lanes, delivers with this neighborhood hangout. Located in the southern half (the lounge portion) of the former Powerhouse restaurant, New Line assumes the same layout as Powerhouse's, but there's a new crop of comfy booths and a more laid-back vibe overall. Vintage photos on the walls give a nod to the building's original duty powering the northwest rail line from Chicago to Milwaukee, then called the "new line." Hand-formed burgers on pretzels rolls come topped with chipotle glaze and pepper jack cheese or the classic combo of bacon, cheddar and a fried egg. Daily signatures such as the turkey-bacon-mozzarella Honeymooner sandwich, chopped chicken salad and buffalo wings make an appearance on the menu, while a long lineup of appetizers (mini-crab cakes, queso fundido, asiago-dusted fries with garlic dipping sauce) beckons for happy hour gatherings.
