Wrong time wrong place?

Walking into Luxbar feels like the next big trend. Everyone is loud and packed in like sardines in a can. We were seated along the aisle close to the entrance butted up against the railing of the stairs to the second level. We boxed in the table against the wall and practically shared our dinner and conversations with them. Our server was nice but no where to be found at times. As in most restaurants the servers that take your order don't always bring out your food. When our entrees arrived the server chased down the gentlemen dropping off our plates telling us there was a mistake. Our entrees were brought back after a few minutes looking the same as they left. Overall I have no great desire to return to Luxbar. It is overpriced small portions where the ambience is nothing special. Perhaps we went on the wrong night - a cold friday evening? Either way if this is the next big trendy place to be I see it fading fast...

Friendliest place in town!

This was our second visit to this Gold Coast "Neighborhood Bar". The first was not very memorable (average food and service) and maybe the reason it took almost a year to go back, but I'm glad we did.
We stopped in on a Thursday night without reservations and were told it would be about 15-20 minutes for a table and we went to the bar to get a drink. Bar was very busy, but the bartender was very attentive and we had no problem getting a drink. We found some space close to one of the doors and were amazed at how almost every server going in and out to the patio greeted us with a smile.
We were seated in about 10 minutes, and received the same friendly attitude and service throughout our evening. When my husband ordered the Fried Chicken, the server even suggested he get the half order because the portion is so big. She was right! Not very often you find a server down selling. How refreshing!!
The manager stopped by (beautiful blue eyes) and couldn't have been nicer, offering his card and in finding out we were locals that haven't been in for a while, offered us dessert.
As we finished with an amazing Snickers Pie dessert, my husband commented on how every member of the staff was smiling and seeming to have fun even though they were very busy.
Going back next week and hoping nothing has changed!

Worth the wait...
By SoCool from westloop, July 21, 2008

Food - 4 stars - Chicken sandwich was fresh and well seasoned
Ambiance - 3 stars - We had to wait almost thirty minutes for a table that had rocky seats. The interior is very clean and the bathrooms were roomy and stocked.
Service - 3 stars - Our server was very busy, and forgot to check us for a some time.
She made it up by giving us dessert on the house...
Music/TV - 4 stars - comfortable music for a loud crowd and HD tv's are plentiful...

Take the time and valet...

WIll return: a fine brunch exprience

A noticeable tinge of inclusiveness seeped out into the outdoor dining area as we made our way inside. With outdoor seating at a wait of 30 minutes and a wait for upstairs at a wait of 15 minutes, we decided to dine on the main level where there was no wait. My wife and I were seated immediately in the main dining area.

It was pretty hot and humid in the main dining area, a stark contrast from the enjoyable weather outside and the breezy and cool upper level. Our server did offer the elevator to my nine-month-plus pregnant wife to access the ladies room, which was greatly appreciated.

My meat lovers Omelette was good, though it didn't come with cheese, which i found surprising and to my error, didn't notice it until the dish was in front of me. My wife had the French Toast topped with powdered sugar, whipped cream and strawberries. She found the breakfast favorite enjoyable and even had a strong liking of the type of bread the toast used. The server was attentive and friendly and even inquired about my wife's pregnancy. That's nice small-talk to say the least.

The restaurant has a Sunday brunch buffet that we hope to visit sometime soon.

Used to be a "regular" - but will never return

My wife and I stopped by on a Saturday morning for brunch and asked to be seated outside. They have a no reservations policy, which is fine, and we were told that we were first on the list for a table and would be seated in 10-15 mins. But then we waited for 45 mins and watched as four parties who arrived after us were seated before us. We talked to the manager and he did not apologize or deny it, but just insisted we just call him ahead of time, or "text him", and he would "take care of us" because he "takes care of his people." We explained that we don't want to be "taken care of" and that we don't play the "in-crowd game"- we just want to get seated when and as promised - not ahead of anyone waiting in line before us, etc. Bottom line is that this place is playing the "who knows who" game and if you like that, by all means join in. But we don't. We don't expect "special" service, we expect to be treated fairly. And so should you. BTW, the food is fine bar food, and the service is decent. But the "cluby," "velvet rope" management philosophy is backwards, esp for a place that is trying to differentiate itsself from Gibson's and cultivate a neighborhood hangout feel. Good luck if you choose to go there and choose not to use your connections or flex muscle. But there are many fine and comparable dining options at that level where you don't have to play games to get a seat when promised.

Lame

Everything at this place from the decor (too bright lighting, ugly plaid tablecloths), to the customers (tourists in sweatshirts) to the menu (Chicken Caesar salad?) screamed "TGI Fridays!!". Given the name and location, I had expected it to have at least a slight cool factor, but I was wrong. The seared tuna salad was bland to the point of being inedible. the burger was decent. And did I really need a bathroom attendant to hand me a single sheet of cheap brown paper towel? This place is a waste of space.

nothing special
By darkling from Logan Square, October 30, 2007

My friends and I dined here recently on a weeknight and found the dining room to be smoking allowed in half the space with no actual separation - strike one. The music being played was too loud and a hodge podge of 60s to 90s pop hits - strike two. Our waitress had no clear answer to a question about the presence of nuts in a dish - strike three. The food was good, but nothing special. A disappointing addition to the "strip" on Rush.

stopped in for dinner recently...

stopped in for dinner recently for the first time.... had the mini filet sliders which were delicious, but my chicken friend steak was average at best and served with cold, crumbly mashed potatoes. Overrated and overpriced, this place can only get by because of it's location. Won't be back.
