Luxbar

Neighborhood: Rush & Division
18 E. Bellevue Pl.

Chicago, IL 60611

Price range: $$$ ($16-$25)

The team behind Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse and Hugo's Frog Bar run a much more neighborhoody spot with Luxbar. Don't look for a neighborhood dive though; the interior of the two-story space features black marble and mahogany walls, black and white checkerboard marble floors, a black marble staircase with a brass railing and a mahogany bar with backlit white onyx panels. Seating mixes leather booths with 1940s-inspired tables and chairs. On the menu, look for small plate choices like tuna tartare with fried wonton chips, a selection of sliders (like filet mignon and pulled pork), plus sandwiches, salads and desserts. The wine list is smaller and more approachable than either Gibsons or Hugo's, and yes, martinis are still available.

In summer 2009, the bar revamped its upstairs portion -- usually used for overflow or private parties -- and christened it LuxLounge, though you won't see that name displayed anywhere in the space. Aiming for a vibe akin to a living room dance party, an all-female staff will tend bar and man the night's playlist from a laptop set up at a couch rather than a formal DJ booth. Order up pitchers of sangria or mojitos up here just the same as downstairs, as the cocktail menu is identical. Open Saturdays only for now, starting with a dry run July 25, followed by an official kickoff Aug. 1.

Nicki's Hot Spots

I enjoy most any type of place. Some of these spots are fancy and well known, others are hidden dive gems. Some are new as well, and I'm lovin it baby.
