Going to Red's is a rite of passage for South Side men and women in their early twenties. Sometimes referred to as The Infamous Red's, the place is known especially for its very social Thursday nights, which are Ladies Nights--women get in free and men pay a little bit more. Decor features purple neon and lots of glass block; enormous windows provide a view of the boulevard. The big horseshoe-shaped bar has plenty of seats but you have to get there early if you want one. There is no dance floor but that has never stopped anyone. Dancing is reserved for the aisles, when you can get through them, and don't let the mirrors fool you, either--there really are a lot of people in here. After 9 p.m., a dress code is enforced: Gentlemen, no hats. Ladies and gents, no sneakers.
