If one of your goals in life is to visit all the seediest, smokiest dives in the Midwest, your soul will be forever restless until you visit Red's. And it's not easy to find. You may think it has been closed down and put up for sale because the address--3479 S. Archer--is deceptive. In fact, it's wrong. Red's is not there. It's connected to that address, but its entrance is not on Archer. Go to 3479, walk to the corner where Archer, Hoyne and 35th converge, pretend you're about to cross the widest part of the intersection, then turn around 180 degrees. Now you're facing the door to Red's Lounge. There are live blues and R&B bands on weekends on the cramped, shag-carpeted stage. The owner himself has a band that sometimes plays. He's also the only one who knows the performance schedule, so unless he's around, the answer to the question "Who's playing this weekend?" will be either "The owner's band" or "I don't know. Somebody's comin' in."
