Last night was my 1st opportunity try this place. It was easy enough to find & had parking. There was a nice wine colored theme with checkerboard tables. A bar is in back & a stage up front with an assortment of photos of musicians playing overhead. The place was properly ventilated,& seating was great. Food can be ordered from the nearby restaurants Calypso Cafe and Dixie Kitchen then brought to you by the Checkerboard's waitstaff. This is a really laid-back environment a nice place to hear great music and to unwind. The band that was there was very entertaining they played a nice set and blended in a few diddies here and there to make you laugh (i.e. Little Drummer Boy/a Pa Rum pa pum pum intertwined with a savvy blues song),so they were quite engaging. The lead singer was terrific. All in all I plan to go back and bring a few friends.

This was my first time at the new location... the first waitress who was with us took our first drink order and disappeared... the second one came through and made me feel welcome... the music was AWESOME and the drinks were not bad at all... I had a great time and I recommend anyone to check it out.

We went the day after Thanksgiving. Great music. Doesn't look like there is a bad seat in the house. As for the supposed non-smoking rule outside the bar, don't be fooled--it wasn't enforced, as there was a table of chainsmokers just in front of us. But like I said, great music at a very reasonable price ($10 for Koko Taylor and her Blues Machine).
