Hops & Barley

Neighborhood: Portage Park

This two-floor bar/restaurant is located at Montrose and Milwaukee in the historic Klafter building (built in the 1920s by David Saul Klafter, a Daniel Burnham protege). On the ground floor, 16-foot ceilings, exposed beams and brick, and wooden floors create a laid-back sports bar/restaurant atmosphere, complete with five 42-inch plasma TVs. Expect a menu of traditional bar food, including appetizers (coconut shrimp, fried and grilled calamari, buffalo wings and more), burgers, sandwiches, ribs, steak and weekly fish specials. The lower level's good for lounging; sit back and relax in a wrap-around, black leather booth or chill at a cocktail table. When the weather cooperates, pull up a chair at the sidewalk cafe. If eating and drinking's not enough to grab your attention, check out the bartop arcade/trivia game or internet jukebox on the lower level.
