Happy Village

The sign outside reads "Welcome to the Happy Village Bar: The Happiest Place in East Village." It's a bold claim for such a low-key spot, but the friendly and chatty clientele may just make you believe it. The long bar hosts a super-casual neighborhood crowd with a taste for beer and Italian sausage. Inside, they sit among vintage posters, slot machines without jackpots and a wall-clock flanked by pictures of Robert and John F. Kennedy. The back door opens onto a giant summer patio replete with arbors, picnic tables, gardens and a goldfish pond adorned with figurines. The current owner, whose parents owned it before her, has kept a family-run feel to the place. She cooks up pierogies and meatballs once a month and turns the place downright festive around the holidays, including a backyard petting zoo at Easter time.

I enjoy most any type of place. Some of these spots are fancy and well known, others are hidden dive gems. Some are new as well, and I'm lovin it baby.
