I went to English recently with a group of girlfriends and we enjoyed 1/2 off on our bottle of wine. I found the staff to be helpful and prompt with service. I got the grilled chicken sandwich, which was fabulous and my friends enjoyed their entrees as well. WE will be returning again soon. P.S. patio seating looks nice too, unfortunately it was pouring when we came to eat, but I have my eye on that for next time.

This truly is a late night bar. Show up at 10:30-11 on Friday/Saturday night and you won't be upset with the crowd. They have good drink specials going on & a unique food menu. Plus the place boasts a tri-level interior thats a diff atmosphere on every floor. I enjoy the pool tables on the 2nd floor, but late night there's usually dancing on 3 and great dining space on the 1st. Check it out next time you go out in River North.

This past Saturday my girlfriend and I stopped into English for a drink and an appetizer around dinner time... I've never been, and assumed there would be quite a long wait yet was pleasantly surprised when we were seated right away and on the first floor. Our server was right there before we had even sat down. We ordered the chicken wings which came with an awesome blue cheese dip and side coleslaw that tamed the heat of em and also a few sliders.. which were hard to choose from since they offer like 10 different kinds! I'd recommend the place and my girlfriend wants to make a weekly ritual of getting the wings there!

I adore this place. Everytime we try a new place we always end up back at English, its comfotable, service is always good and the decor is cool.I love the spinach dip and my boyfriend always craves the fried egg BLT!
I was there for a friends birthday last weekend and the place was slammed thought we would have no luck getting a table but the staff was so helpful they got us a large booth on the third floor. We danced and drank all night!

After reading mixed reviews on this place I was hesitant to check it out. Truth be told, I should not have wasted an evening at their establishment. After visiting the bar and now re reading the reviews I have come to the conclusion that a majority of these "5 star" ratings are written by those with a vested interest in the Bar.

As the one star reviews had warned, I received snooty attitudes from the staff and the bouncers were rude to my wife and her friends.

The management doesn't understand the concept of providing good customer service, theme seem to have this idea that you as there customer should feel privileged to be in their bar.

The reason for most of their traffic is that they get overflow from surrounding bars, without that I believe they would go under.

Conclusion: If you see multiple bad reviews, check another place out, there are plenty of bars and restaurants in Chicago

I recently planned an event here, and English did a horrible job. The staff was rude, the food was horrible, and it was impossible working with the cocky, incompetent management. Steer clear of this bar!

I don't know what it is. I keep coming back. Maybe it's the design and layout, or maybe it's the really good food. I don't think I've ever had great service here, which is usually very important to me being as I'm a server myself but I seem to ignore it. I've been here about 10 times so far. I love going on the weekends when the 3rd floor is open. I just really like the space.

This is perhaps the worst bar I've ever patronized. A pretentious crowd being served by an oblivious and pretentious staff… horrible floor layout and design. Don't waste your time and money when there are so many better places to go.

We had lunch here recently on a wonderful Sunday afternoon. It seemed like the moment we were greeted by our server we got the feeling like we were imposing on her. It took forever to get a drink and our food order was completely wrong but the worst part was her careless attitude. It was strange how this interaction changed the tone of the day - I truly have never had this experience. On the positive side, the waffle fries were great and we loved the space.
