I am not one to really go thru the trouble to write a review but i have been going to eat at Ave for about a year now. I read the other peoples comments here and I'm not really sure what was up with them but I always have consistently good food there at good prices and a very friendly staff. It's really the only very good option in the neighborhood to grab some food and watch a game.
Report This ReviewA couple of friends and I decided to meet at this place to watch some football last Sunday. I got there first and since there were no seats immediately available, just stood in the crowd near the bar watching the end of the early games. I was there maybe 10 minutes (friends running late), when the bartender points to me and asked "Can I get you anything?". I said no because I wanted to wait for everyone else, at which point he said "Really? Because this isn't a public park!" Are you kidding me? I can't stand in a bar for 10 minutes without getting a drink? Naturally, when my friends finally showed up, we went down the street to Friar Tuck's and had a great time! So thanks, rude bartender! If you hadn't been a jacka$$, I might not have discovered a bar that actually WANTED my business! I wonder how many poor reviews management has to see commenting on rude/inattentive employees before they wise up. It's not like there's a shortage of bars in this neighborhood.
Report This ReviewThe Avenue Tav is really one of a few options to hang out if you really care about quality and friendliness. The people that work and hang out there are very outgoing and the food is not the typical frozen out-of-a-box type of bar food. Have you ever had the chicken tenders??? The waiter told me everyone loves them and you can count me in that "everyone" now!
Report This ReviewI went to meet some of my girlfriends out, for a night on the town. One of my friends lives close to there, so we went. I wish we had not gone. First the womens room has a smell that will make you vomit (smells like a dead animal, NO JOKE). Then the one employee that was working was rude, I understand that he was alone but come on thats not my problem. We ate and drank, then left as soon as we were done eating. The food sucked, I have had better food and service in a bad dive bar before. I would never go to this dump again.
Report This ReviewI gave this place several chances, but bad service and consistently terrible food will keep me away forever. There are too many good bars in the area to waste time here.
They hype the chicken tender basket, which is on special once a week for $5. The first time I went, the chicken was decent enough to warrant a return trip. After that, the quality dropped and never recovered. Nasty vegetable oil-soaked chicken like the fryer isn't quite hot enough. Every time.
Report This ReviewHI, I am a regular at Avenue Tavern every Sunday. I was there eating with my boyfriend when 4 guys came in to watch soccer. Only 2 of them ordered anything at all. one ordered a sandwich and one ordered a drink. I heard the waitress ask the other 2 to order at least a pop and they told her no and yelled at her. I think they were just cheap. if you are going to a bar to watch a 4 hour sporting event you could at least order a drink. Other than that I love the Avenue and look forward going there again this weekend.
Report This ReviewBartenders were inattentive. Not like it was a busy night. Place seemed cool enough till I ordered a whiskey sour. Call me a purist if you want, but unless your mixed drink has soda in it it shouldn't be made w/ the soda-gun. No whiskey to speak of, all sour. Which is fine as far as I'm concerned. But when you obviously haven't touched your drink in a half-hour and have pushed it most of the way back to the bar lip, you would expect a bartender to at least ask how things are. Worse than that when I press the issue that the drink tastes foul, he acts offended and wont remove the horrible drink from the tab.
i wont be returning anytime soon...
Couple months ago i went in there with two of my friends. We were trying to watch this soccer game on a sunday @ 1PM. Cubs game was @ 7PM and there was maybe 5-6 people in the place. We sat and asked the waitress if we could get this game on TV with SOUND. She said "I dont think so but let me ask". Ok, she came back and said they cant do it because they will only put baseball, and football games on TV with sound. But the game was on silent. We decided to stay and wanted to watch the game silent, whatever.
Next thing you know she comes over and asks for our order, we ordered food and drinks but one of my friends didnt want to get anything, she gave a look and left. I was on my way to the restroom and she grabbed me to tell my friend to order something. I said maybe later but he doesnt want anything now. 2 minutes later she came back to our table and told (not asking politely or nicely, just telling!) my friend that he has to order something.. he got mad and said he doesnt want anything. We got really irritated at that point. I stepped in and said that they call themselves a sportsbar and cant even turn the volume up for a game that we wanted to watch and there is not even anybody there to get disturbed! Now they are making my friend to order something (he probably would have ordered something anyways). She said "oh yeah, then be it!"
2 minutes later this guy who calls himself the manager comes to our table and says that my friend needs to order something because he dont think that he needs a table with a tab of $10 to sit here for 3 hours. At that point I went off and told him that it is the most ridicilous service that i ever had at any places that i ve been in my life, u cant say that to a customer! Everything happened in about 5 minutes. Manager told us that "It is totally fine with him if we would leave now" WAOW! How about that for a great service??
I told him that with this mentality, he wont be a manager here longer.. plus the attitude problem of the waitress, she should be gone too..
I am definitely NOT going there again and telling this to every single person that might go there..
We were served drinks in chipped and broken glasses - when pointed out to the waiter, he got pissy and assigned another waiter to our table - the staff needs a major attitude adjustment - food very sub-par and not good value - drinks lite - would not recommend to anyone.
Report This ReviewNot a dump, not pretentious, great food, can wear anything....feels like your home but you get waited on...what more could you ask for? BBQ chix pizza is amazing...and minus the 10,000 calories in the cookie sundae it might be the best thing I've ever eaten. I'm not lying.
