Sushi Wabi: User Reviews
Sushi Wabi
842 W. Randolph St. - Chicago312-563-1224
the service was VERY average, but for the price of food, the service is bad. it looked like they had friends that are visiting helping out at the restaurant. we had 2 maki which i did not remember the name, one was good, and another was not bad but definitely not good, it had no taste but with a lot of nicely drizzled sauces on the side, we don't know if we are supposed to eat with that or it was for decoration, bad service did not tell us what it was, and we could not even finish it.
nigiri pieces are huge with rice, not proportionally made, not authentic, must be non japanese run, they don't know what they are doing, americanized it anyway, no one will know, lol
the pricing is expensive, the special maki are $17 a roll, it's definitely one of the highest in the city, not worth it
tried it and no more, not coming back

The service here is definitely very average, nothing spectacular. Drink selection is decent, but not great. The ambiance is just ok, it's a little cramped and the tables are lined up RIGHT next to eachother (I never liked this setup at restaurants because its loud and congested, but if you don't mind it then it's fine). Very small bar at the back. What keeps us coming back to this restaurant is the food -- they have a great menu selection, and the sushi is awesome. Try the godzilla maki role, it's sensational. There is nothing awesome about this place but the food is very good, so if nothing else matters to you, this is a great place to go.

I love this place! I don't love the atmosphere (wish it felt a tad less like a cement cave and had a bit better lighting over the tables) but those are mere quibbles against the stunning array of sushi and rolls they offer!
They hae some of the most innovative and delicious offerings - Fire roll, Godzilla Roll, Sweet Shrimp roll, asparagus appetizer..to name a few. Anyone can put together a great meal here, even non-raw eaters.
Yes, it's ALWAYS packed - but the simple answer is make a reservation a week ahead, or get there early (before 6 PM) if you don't want to wait. It's packed because it's so great!
Enjoy

I don't know why there are bad reviews. We are regulars at wabi and the service is great and the food is delicious. The sushi is the best, I highly recommend the "godzilla" and the chefs special sashimi. Servers are knowledgable and attentive. The place is very hip and trendy. Overall a great place to visit.

I get it, This place is on Randolph so it will always be crowded and more expensive than my usual sushi joints. Went on a Monday and couldn't get a table so we bellied up at the sushi bar. Then I received a cold(not hot towel) which is a real turn off. Waitress did not give us the specials, THen we found out they were out of Super White(and it was only 7:30). The wifes seaweed salad was not too good. THe rolls were excellent and pretty big. The nigiri were fresh but very skimpy(thin and short) for the price. All-in-all, I can easily list off 10 way better places to get sushi in the city. I give this place a solid C.

Out of all the sushi places in Chicago, Wabi is still the most consistent in overall value and quality of food. I have been a great admirer of the place since it's beginning when most people in Chicago wheren't sure what sushi even was. I have tried searching high and low throughout all of Chicagoland for a better sushi place (dine in or take out) and am happy to report there is no true competition for Sushi Wabi - yet.

I used to swear by Sushi Wabi, but I've noticed things have been steadily getting worse here, and my last experience finally soured me for good. The sushi rolls were packed with everything but sushi (LOTS of avocado and little fish) and were drenched with way too much sauce. These kinds of rolls are fine at a lower scale sushi joint, but not when you're ponying up the kind of cash you are here. But the worst part was the terrible service - they were clearly focused on just turning tables, and when the server wasn't giving us the evil eye she was roughly rearranging the tables next to us (a not-to-subtle signal that it was time to leave). That would've been fine if we had been there for a while, but we hadn't even been there for an hour! Sorry Sushi Wabi, but there's plenty of other places in Chicago that will actually give me good food and service for my money.

If you haven't already, try Sushi Wabi... it's fresh and can't go wrong with any of the rolls. The only downside is that it's a little pricey and always BUSY! But I take that as a good sign regardless. Make reservations.

After hearing so many great reviews of this place, I was expecting good sushi. There are plenty of amazing sushi bars in this city that are worth going to, this is not one of them. We had the gyu negima as an appetizer, this was delicious, but I didn't go here for the appetizers. For a restaurant to have the word "sushi" in the name, they should concentrate on the quality of their sushi. We had the special roll to start with, maguro, seared albacore, crab meat, chili mayo, scallions and avocado rolled in wasabi tobiko served with a pepper soy, had too many ingredients and the sauce overpowered the whole thing. As for the nigiri, it did not taste like anything. The fish was dry and on giant pieces of rice, which was not cooked all the way through. One little tip, when the rice is crunchy, the rice is not done. I guess I can't really say the sushi was bad, to say that, it would have had to taste like something. Don't waste your time eating here. There are plenty of other places to eat where they at least cook the rice properly and for a reasonable price.

So I was really excited to try this place out, since one of my friends said it was good...And it was definitely NOT! Yes, the food "looks" good....but since I like my sushi fresh, clean, crispy....and ive had it that way before at other places...this place was a dissapointment. I felt like it wasnt fresh, and it just didnt hit the spot. Also I am so not a fan of long restaurants, that aren't spacious.....This place has all the little tables right next to each other, so there isnt much privacy if ur going out with your friend or a date....its kinda irritating, when u have to talk over other people, and want to enjoy your food too. The sushi bar was okay, but the seats were really low, and it felt weird to sit on them. I tried the Godzilla roll, it was so so....again not fresh the way ive had it at other places. And it felt kinda fatty. I would recommend going to KAMAHACHI in streeterville if you want GOOD sushi.
Trust me.....im not lying when I say you can do better! (if u dont trust me...and u do go....u'll see what I meant when u go there for yourself....)
