Gene & Georgetti: User Reviews
Gene & Georgetti
500 N. Franklin St. - Chicago312-527-3718
Walk right into this Italian Steak House set in a time zone reminiscent of the great Chicago Stock yards, Hollywood celebrities and the Cities 'shakers and maker's. For 70 years G&G has been serving generation after generation, including my family. The reasons are obvious. It's grand bar, it's famous home fries, and most of all great steaks and Italian dishes coupled with it's amazing atmosphere. Ask proprietors Toni, Marion or Michelle to tell you about the wall mural or stories about the celebrities who still frequent this great spot. Whenever I head into the City, I continue my family tradition for a great meal at a great spot Gene and Georgetti.

You've got to be kidding. Limited menu. Salads are a hack of head of lettuce with some bottle dressing dumped on it. Cheap paneling for decor. Steaks are adequate. Servers who seem disinterested in a 'take or leave it' attitude. There are a million steak places in Chicago, why would anyone suffer the abuse of this place?

Go for the steak. If you like it, keep going back because they REALLY like the regulars.

Went there at the request of an out-of-town friend. Service and food were OK, nothing special. I prefer Harry Caray's.

Went with a party of 8. Steaks were really good and were a few dollars cheaper than gibsons. Drinks were great. Ambiance is so dated that it is entertaining. Sides were huge like big enough for 4 people, which was annoying because they didn't warn us that we would be getting full plates and they were average.

We went there last night for the first time (party of 10) - you aren't acknowledged when you enter - when you leave and the entire time you are there - it was over then minutes before the waiter took our drink order - we had to find the waiter to take our order - had to ask for coffee - had to ask for dessert - then had to ask for the check. Their idea of a salad is lettuce that looks like they got it from a dumpster and then drowned it in dressing to try and hide the fact the lettuce was old. A complete disappointment - Chicago has wonderful steak houses - this isn't one of them.

It's the second time I've been here and being a regular visitor from out of town have tried most the famous restaurants in Chicago, but I find that this one truly hits the mark! This is a classic old-style Chicago steak house, historical right down to the staff, (some of whom some have been there 35+ years), and both times I've gone I couldn't have been more pleased. Excellent steaks, over-sized portioins of everything, (be prepared to take home lots of leftovers), and the service is second to none. This restaurant is a wonderful attribute to the city of Chicago and a great testamonial as to why Chicago is the restaurant capital of the USA. Apparently this was Lucille Ball's favorite place to dine back in the day when she was in Chicago and it hasn't missed a beat since!

We were told by a friend that this was a really great restaurant with good food. When we first walked in we were shocked that it wasn't a fancier place. Then our waiter came over and could barely speak english, When he brought our drinks over, he kind of just set them on the table hard and walked away, When he brought the bread and butter out it was just like a walk by. We ordered Calamari for an appetizer, it was chewy like chewing on a rubber band. When my sterak came out it was all shriveled and crispy, very dry and no flavor. Please do not waste your money at this restaurant, go somewhere more reasonable priced and get way better food.

Growing up in Chicago we always went to this restaurant. To bad that they forget generations do grow up and take the place of the elders or regulars if you want to call these old folk that. Tried to take friends there for a change of pace. Didn't even get acknowledged at the door. They can keep their old farts. We'll stick to the better steak house in Chicago. Go to Gibsons, Mortons or even wildfire for a great meal, atmosphere and friendly staff. This place has become a dump!

With all of the great steakhouses Chicago has to offer, you can skip this one. Unless you're a recognized regular, service is poor. The real problem, however, is the food. I gave it a third shot last night and had one of the worst meals I've ever eaten at a restaurant. Cold food, bad flavor, tough meat. A complete disappointment. If you're in the mood for a steak, give Keefer's a try. Best steak I've ever eaten.
