The Pepper Canister
509 N. Wells St. - Chicago312-467-3300
The PC has the feel of a neighborhood pub with a downtown location -- hard to come by for Loop dwellers on the North Side. A short walk from Gene & Georgetti's or Kinzies, and right across the street from Sushi Samba, it's a perfect place for a genuine pint. There are plenty of regulars to ground its neighborhood feel, and the staff is genuine. The food is advanced for most bar menus; yesm there's a pub burger but also a pretty fine Fish & Chips, as well as some not-so-regular fare like Scotch Eggs. It's noisy when the crowd slides in, but there's almost always a stool or a table.
Report This ReviewI went here during the NeoCon convention and was surprised to find out that they had changed the menu for the sole purpose of gouging the NeoCon people - and any other regulars that happened to go there during that time. They also took the calamari off the menu because they said it took too long. There is only 1 other table in the place and my friend and I ask the server if there was any way we could get the delicious calamari. She tells us to talk to the owner, who is behind the bar watching TV. So we ask the owner and he says, get this, "if you want calamari you're gonna have to go somewhere else" and goes back to watching TV. That is exactly what we did and will never go back again.
Report This ReviewIs there any such thing as a happy hour anymore? Not here, $6 for a domestic pint after work wasn't the way we hoped to wrap up the day. Good food, good atmosphere and outdoor seating.
Report This ReviewThe atmosphere in the Pepper Canister is charming, but in the several times that I have been at a table as opposed to the bar, the service has been terrible. I'm not sure why the waitresses are so rude, but it really detracts from the overall experience. The bartender is very nice, so if you go I'd say you're much better off just sitting at the bar instead of "troubling" the waitresses.
Report This Reviewgreat place, however why is it that I can buy a pitcher of beer at the bar a few doors down for the same price i can buy a bottle of miller light here?????
