Freshed food I've had!

Me and my fiance have been to many restaurants around the city. I read reviews and every time places just don't live up to what I hear. I was looking for a restaurant for my birthday and went to Roys. Although they messed up the night we originally were suppose to dine, I wrote in and they handled it very well, sent me a gift certificate, and the GM even called me personally to appologize. Needless to say I'm so happy I went back! The food was so fresh, which to me is worth all the pennies in the world. Clean, Fresh, Good food. Nice ambiance for an intimate evening and a good amount of food if you get an app, entree and dessert. Try the hawaiian martini! It's awesome!

A moderately upscale place that is 100% kid friendly - wow!

I've been to Roy's now several times in Chicago, Palm Desert and Tampa Bay and have yet to be disappointed. Always seated promptly and most importantly for me - we have a 2 1/2 year old and are always looking for kid-friendly restaurants. They go out of their way to entertain my daughter every time - first they bring a complimentary dinner plate before we even order (cheese quesadilla, sliced apple, celery, carrots and ranch dipping sauce). We don't even have to order her a meal. And then a complimentary sundae at the end for her every time. To boot, last night, they brought over a portable DVD player with a selection of DVDs to choose from! We actually forgot she was sitting right next to us and were able to enjoy the night with our other friends without any of the normal toddler issues - of course she was having a good time too!

Now on to the food! For appetizers, we have had all of the sushi rolls - all great, the most interesting and flavorful is the Lakalinau which has seared kobe beef. The short ribs are also very good. For entrees the Butterfish is to die for and you should definitely try it once ($29) but for a great deal, try the prixe-fix menu - for $35 you can't go wrong and everything is unbelievably tasty and portions are great for the value. As far as desserts go, I've had many chocolate souffles but this one is by far my most favorite. I can't say enough about Roys so definitely check it out and judge for yourself.

Happy I tried it...

Roy's is definitely something you should try at least once. It won't suit everyone with its unique fusion flavors but I enjoyed it. My girlfriend and I have been a few times and each time has had its highlights and disappointments. We have learned to be picky about what we order. Some dishes are definitely amazing and others are twists on classics that feel like take out basics dressed up. Overall we were won over by the service and the ambiance. Our dessert ended up taking a little longer than expected and the server kept us updated and checked in on us every few mins apologizing even though it was no fault of his. In the end he ended up comp. a round of drinks. The dining room is spacious and modern and the view of State street while dining makes you feel like Hawaii crossed over to Chicago at some point. Definitely a must try if you're into the fusion movement!

An Absolute Must!
By CK1985 from Schaumburg, August 6, 2008

This place is great! We had the Aloha Roll and Lobster Dim Sum as appetizers, and both were spectacular. Two of us had the Classic Trio and could not get enough of the butterfish!! The ahi was very good too, especially in the slightly spicy sauce. Don't forget to order the Chocolate Souffle, you will not regret it! I've been to several restaurants in Chicago, and this may be my favorite!

My only complaint - Our party of 4 had reservations for 7:00, but still had to wait nearly an hour on what didn't appear to be a very busy night (it was a Tuesday). We were concerned the hostess had forgotten about us, and felt they were rude when we asked about the status of our reservation after 30 minutes of waiting. We had cocktails in the bar during that time, though, so it did not spoil our night.

I agree with John, Gsulii does not know good food; We had dinner on the outdoor patio on a Saturday night, the atmosphere was great and service top notch. I would recommend Roy's to anyone who wants to enjoy good food and great service. I have eaten at many other seafood spots in the city and I will definitely be back to Roy's

Long wait for food
By Chi-town from Mag Mile, July 7, 2008

Our party of six had late dinner reservations at 8:15 p.m. on Sat. night. When we made reservations, the restaurant acted like "6" was a large party and they only had so many tables available for this amount of people, thus the later reservation time. They said we were on stand by for earlier reservations if they became available, but we decided to just stick with the later time because we couldn't make plans with others when the time up in the air. Okay, so they put us in the furthest table in the back, up against black walls, no view, around the corner from the bathrooms. I don't know why, but it was still noisy here. Service was relaxed.....drinks and appetizers arrived in a reasonable amount of time. But, the entrees took over an hour, so for the few people that didn't order appetizers, it was quite a long and uncomfortable wait. Our waiter only showed up about 1 minute before the food left the kitchen. Everyone seemed to enjoy their selections, but then, after such a long wait, anything would have tasted good. Besides, I think they were trying to make the best out of this situation. We usually bring people new to the downtown area to Roy's for a nice dinner, and this was the case Saturday night. I don't think we will do this again. I feel like we were pushed to later reservations, pushed into the back corner, and pushed too long to wait to eat. Terribly disappointing.

Nothing Better!
By Liz from ohare, April 25, 2008

In all of my life I have never tasted anything better! I am only 9 years of age so I had things off the kids menu, but I tried my mom's tuna, butter fish, and grilled salmon combo and it was fabulous! We had a giant chocolate dessert that was just incredible. The surroundings were beautiful, and I tried new things, I loved it!

Roys Rocks!

gsulli is obviously a food amateur. Two stars? Please. Go back to the Olive Garden. My wife and I have LOVED Roy's since our first trip to Maui years ago. The seared Ahi is the best I have ever had. The service is TOP NOTCH. Roy's is one of Chicago's best.

What a disappointment!

Roy's is a good place to go if you are in a town that you are not familiar with and are just trying to have a decent meal. However, if you live in a town like Chicago with hundreds of really good reataurants, why would you go to Roy's? Tonight we were out with a group, someone else chose the venue and we were really disappointed. The ambiance is non-existent. The food is nothing special. It is all over priced and just OK. The service was absolutely terrible. The waiters and managers are all a bunch of amateurs. this is the kind of restaurant where kids go to get some experience as a waiter. If you can't get a reservation anywhere else then Roy's will do. However, I would strongly recommend that you consider a local restaurant that is not a training ground for the kiddie corps of new waiters.
