For my birthday, my boyfriend took me to the Red Rooster. The restaurant itself is small, but the ambiance is romantic and cozy. Dimly lit. Candles on the tables. Perfect. I believe our waiter served the entire place by himself and did a lovely job. The food was incredible! I ordered one of the chicken entrees; he ordered the pork tenderloin, and I absolutely loved both. The flavors were outstanding. I highly recommend visiting the Red Rooster. It's one of a kind!

Charming and romantic

My boyfriend and I decided to go Red Rooster three weeks ago, neither of us had ever been. The ambience was warm, romantic, and definitely intimate. The restaurant is very small. The service wasn't exceptional, but it certainly wasn't terrible. The menu is priced decently, almost would like to say on the inexpensive side. Will be going back soon!

disappointed

Nice ambiance and mood. Unknowledgeable staff. Lackluster food with unappetizing presentation.

Billed as a french cafe and wine bar, the dining room seemed more like a country barn than a wine bar or cafe. The wine/liquor list, intimate setting and laissez-faire service was all that seemed French.

Our server, daughter of the owner, couldn't answer most of our questions about the menu. Her recommendations were based solely on her personal preference, rather than dish descriptions or popularity. In fact, she mentioned more dishes that she disliked than liked. She was, however, quite friendly and accommodating. She kept the restaurant open late so my date and I could continue to visit over after-dinner drinks.

The appetizer cheese plate was delicious, but should have been offered as a dessert. Our main courses were an insult to the French. Their unappealing presentations were highlighted by their lack of flavor and boring sides. The strawberry-rhubarb compote for dessert was clearly made with frozen strawberries, which our server denied.

If I return, it would be only for wine and cheese; but, why bother.

This is a nice little place with maybe 12 tables in total. It's a little hidden and you feel a little weird walking into this tiny dining room as first. However, the food and prices were great. Service is a little slow, but that's part of the experience...expect to be there for at least an hour and a half. Nice wine list, with most bottles around $30. Great selection of nightly specials as well.

If the place was crowded, I could see how service could be an issue. Be prepared to go somewhere else in the neighborhood if you walk in and the tables look full. There are plenty of nearby restaurants. I'd say, go and hope you get a table, but if not...have a backup plan for a different spot in the area.

Great food, Great atmosphere

We just had an amazing time here. We were the only diners on a Wednesday evening. Our server was fun. Starters were pretty good. My main dish melted in my mouth, huge portions. Our dessert and wine were both very good. The atmosphere was romantic and unique. Prices were very reasonable for the type of cuisine. Go during the week and soak up the atmosphere.

Horrible Service...

We were treated so bad, its hard to explain. This place is way understaffed, and completely ignored me and my date. We had reservations and stood in the place for half and hour and no one even acknowledged us. There were several other very odd interactions, but in the end, this was a big disappointment. Go somewhere else.

The Red Rooster, The food was good, the atmosphere was like eating in a living room with people you did not know. the bus-guy kept bumping my chair. It was as if they passed on cozy to crowd in three too many tables making it a bad experience, we do not need to return.
The waiter forgot my dessert, We were in the restaurant whenn they opened at five, we watched as the other tables filled, yet we were served after a party of eight which arrived after us, no communication why, I watched a couple of tables wiith two, we were four, served before the party of eight, It is a crowded place, could not help but notice. Two of us drank a bottle of wine before dinner showed up.

Please don't tell anybody. This cozy tucked away French joint is the best secret restaurant in Chicago, and I'd like to keep it that way. Food and wine is authentic French and awesome. Service is accommodating and attentive. Overall a great value. Shhhhhh.....

I came here for a birthday dinner recently and it was the most amazing experience. The atmosphere was great, I felt like I was in a little French cafe. The food was perfection so many options and great tasting. Overall it's worth the trip to this cute and quaint hidden treasure.

This used to be one...
By Sandra from Chicago, IL, February 16, 2007

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants, it is really romantic and cute, therefore I figured it would be ideal for Valentine's. Pretty bad idea, we had reservations for 8pm and was seated around 8:45, the waiting area at the bar is way too crowded and cold. after waiting 45 minutes you are just hungry and ready for food, however the torture is not over yet since the dining room is very cold and the service is so slow. the food was not tasty either, my scallops were undercooked and burned at the same time, the experience was so miserable overall we didn't even stay to have desserts. I would not go there again.
