I've been here a handful of times and am never dissapointed. It attracts a good crowd and gives the rare mix of a classy and casual feel a lot of neighborhood joints strive for. I come from Wicker Park to visit this lakeview spot for food, a huge beer garden, Sunday Funday and a good beer/wine list.

I have to disagree

I've never been to Witt's before so I cant compare as the previous posts have. However, I had a very pleasant experience. The food was phenomenal. I was so impressed that I could get a healthy, extremely tasty dish while my boyfriend could get his bar-burger. The wine and beer selection was the best I've seen in the area and the whole staff was eager to inform me about the different selections. I love the outdoor patio, decorated with flowers and flat screen televisions. There was a group of people playing bags, a family with their dog and the bar inside was pretty full. I'll agree that the food was more expensive then what you may pay down the street, but it was also much more flavorful.

What happened to this place?

This used to be one of the best neighborhood bars in the area. Now they are trying to be a wine bar? Completely changed what used to be a great menu. Now trying too hard to be trendy, and honestly food now is not that good. If I want to hit up a wine bar I'll hit 404 down the street. Very disappointing.

Not as good as in the past

Seems to have gone downhill a bit. They have cut the menu in half, portions are smaller. Prices are a little higher than comparable places. Used to be one of my favorite spots, but food isn't as good as it once was, and they seem to be trying to attract the Southport/Wrigley crowd. Beer garden is still one of the better ones in the area.

what is everyone talking about?
By jimmyyankee from lakeview, September 19, 2008

Either the previous reviews of this place were all written by friends of the owners or peoples standards have gone way down. I tried this place last week after checking out spots around my new apartment. I wouldn't have written a review at all except I remembered how everyone raved about the place and I didn't want anyone else to be mislead.
First off where are all the friendly employees everyone was talking about. My server seemed to think I was a nuisance for being there. She didnt specifically tell us we were annoying but she certainly didn't act as though she wanted us there. Anytime we asked for a refill or an extra side of dressing we got at best a mumble before she left and returned (no kldding) five minutes later. The place is not that big. Especially when you consider we watched her stand at the corner and stare up at the TV while we waited.
Second the food is mediocre at best. Granted we did not try the more exotic fare but if you can't do a burger and a salad correctly you probably shouldn't be even attempting the more exotic fare. The burger was ordered medium and came out charred and the funny part was the cheese wasn't even fully melted. The salad was ten bucks and was all lettuce.
I will give you that this is a cool looking place. I stepped out back to check out the beer garden everyone talked about and it seemed like a nice reclusive spot to spend a summer day. I like the booths against the wall that were both comfortable and intimate.
That is about all the good I can muster to say about the place. Everyone seemed genuinely disinterested or as I said even annoyed that we were there. The food and drink were over priced for the product. There weren't that many other people in the place to draw attention away from providing us with service. A side note is that some of the people at the bar helped to make this a less than enjoyable experience also. One guy was sitting at the bar clearly drunk and alternately yelling at the bartender and the woman sitting next to him.
All I can say is since I just moved into the neighborhood I will most likely be in Witts several more times. My friends live across the street and go there out of convienience at least once a month. If I have a different experince the next few times I will certainly retract my comments and side with some of these other reviews but until then please tell me what everyone is talking about. Save your money. If you want a nice meal go to a nice restaurant. If you want a neighborhood pub try somewhere else. If you want a cookie cutter experience masked as "Cheers" witts is your bar.

OMG...I love this place!

I ate here over the weekend and sat in the incredible outdoor patio and the food was awesome! They have TVs out there and we watched the Cubs game without the hassle of Wrigleyville. My favorite was my server Becca who made us feel really welcome. We will definitely make this a regular hangout for the summer!

Knock Knock..

Who is there you ask? A wonderful staff and a bar full of fun that is who. Luckily for me I live within walking distance of this fine establishment but for those of you who do not, I encourage you to check it out. Aside from the high qualiity food and drinks, the service is unmatched. In this day of poor service and long lines, Witts serves as a refreshing oasis in this neighborhood.

I love this place when its warm out. They have a great patio!

In the winter it can get a little crowded especially with small bathrooms.

The staff is really nice and they have good specials too.

A fun bar
By Drew from Lincoln Park, January 15, 2008

Witt's is a great neighborhood bar. It's got lots of charm, decent food (mostly fried), good beer selection, and great, attentive staff. The back room is a perfect place for a private party. It's set up with lots of tables and some TV's so you can stay current in your ESPN intake. Overall, it's a good bar that's well worth the visit. I'm happy to give Witt's a favorable review.

Nickel and Diming the Customer
By BOwens1984 from Lincoln Park, December 26, 2007

I ate at Witt's tonight and ordered the Witt's sampler which included Chicken Fingers. I guess Chicken Fingers does not include a dipping sauce like any other restaurant as the bill included a 25 cent charge for Honey Mustard. Was that really necessary. Also I was the sober driver of the evening and was drinking Coke. I was charged $2.50 for the first soda and $2.50 for every refill. $10 total for 4 sodas from the bag in the box? What a rip off, I used to work in a restaurant and I know how much it costs, was the charge for the refill really necessary? My group was 5 people and the tab was $118 so its not like we weren't ordering anything.

Overall, I would never return to Witts as they feel the need to nickel and dime the customer and charge for every little thing. The server also failed to mention the charge for each drink refill and the charge for the dipping sauce with the chicken fingers. I have never been so disgusted to get a bill in my life.

Witts is a place that no one should visit as their greed is horrid.
