The Gage: User Reviews
This place is fun and people always seem in a good mood anywhere around the bar. The big booths are good and less noisy if you are eating. The food can be very good. I like to stop here to meet friends after work and often wind up staying for dinner.

Two of my girlfriends and I recently went in for dinner at the gage and had an outstanding experience! All of the food was INCREDIBLE, our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and the owner even came over to talk to us and give us recommendations off the menu, as well as personally paired wine with the entrees that we had selected. My friends and I eat out a lot, and this is by far one of the best dining experiences that we have had to date. I would recommend the gage to everybody, and we will definitely be going back in the future!

I have eaten at the Gage about 4 times and the food is excellent. Based on my experience - the service and food are better if you eat there when it is not so busy. You can avoid crowds by eating early 5-6 or late 9-10. Ask to be seated in the back of the restaurant because the noise level and dim lighting in the front (and odd shaped booths that prevent any talking) put a damper on the meal.

I went with a group on a Monday night - loved the atmosphere in the bar, unfortunatily the dining area didn't have the same feeling but it was still quite nice. The food was fine, not the best I've had (especially for the prices) but nothing to complain about either. Service was great. I would return and sit in the bar, with drinks and small plates or apps.

A group of four of us went on a relatively quiet Monday night for a quick bite after some ice skating in Millenium Park. We were greeted and seated by friendly staff who were quick to bring us our drinks and orders and were helpful with the menu (two of our party are vegetarians). Our wonderful and knowledgable server made sure we always enjoyed our meals and had everything we needed. Although a little more pricey than I normally would do, I have to say that it was worth the $20 meals and $14 glass of wine! I will definitely be back!

This was quite possibly the worst restaurant I've ever been to. The server had no idea what the menu included, got lost for 20 minutes while getting a drink order and was rude on top of it. The food was horrible and taste less. Why would anyone want fish and chips that are cold and sitting in a pool of grease? The manager wouldn't even listen to our complaints and brushed us off.
Forget about this place and go some place else...anyplace is better than this.

Noisy. Service: congenial but slow. Pricey. “Crispy” potato salad: tasty, small. Frites: very good. Hanger steak: pretty good. Regular burger: OK. Presentation: ehhh. My companion likes the food. I’m underwhelmed by the whole package. Did I mention noisy?

I had lunch at The Gage for the first time this month and absolutely loved my experience. Aside from the overly unctuous management staff who checked on us at least 4 times, we had a wonderful experience. I can't remember the name of the appetizer we shared but what we received was a mound of fries covered in a delectable gravy and mounds of buttery melted cheese curds. it was perfectly sinful. For starters I took the waitress's recommendation and I ordered a chilled pear and ginger soup, It was so refreshing and tasty I never wanted to reach the bottom of the cup. I've never had anything like it. For lunch I had the seared scallop salad and it was utter perfection.. The presentation was fabulous and it was just the right size. The butter lettuce and light citrus marinade were a perfect mix with my grilled red onions and perfectly seared scallops. The wait staff is very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. I would never normally comment on the bus staff but they were all over us. They tried to take our plates before we were finished many times until eventually one came by and just took the plate without asking.. I began to wonder if they receive commission on the amount of plates they remove from tables. Overall, everything was great but the bus staff and management staff need to tone it down a little. I was "thanked for coming" so many times by two separate managers I began to wonder if I was doing them some kind of grand favor.

My fiance and I ate here for lunch right after Millenium Park. Our server was very attentive and very knowledgeable. Get the Scottish Egg. Not kidding, this is the best appetizer I have ever had. Fish and Chips was great too. It is a little pricey though, even for lunch.

I was in Chicago for less than 24 hours and was advised to visit Billy at his new establishment on S. Michigan Avenue. Upon arriving at the trendy address, seeing Billy work the crowd, the jet lag quickly dissipated and I was shown to my table by "The Proprietor". The menu is simple, extensive and very tasty. The mussels vindaloo, followed by the saddle of roasted elk were perfect in portion, taste and presentation. Listening to Billy describe the creation of The Gage was a delight. Here is a hands on proprietor who takes as much pride in service his guests as he does hearing about satisfied customers. How many times did I hear Billy offer the salutation, "Hi, I'm Billy Lawless, the proprietor. Thank you for visiting us this evening!"?
Don't miss this very pleasant experience. It's definitely worth the time to get there.
