Fun experience with wonderful flavors.

We had a great experience at Moto. We enjoyed the sense of humor of the food. The flavors were wonderful. We would have like to have had a little more background about the restaurant/owners/and chef. If you're not exceptionally into wine, skip the pairings and go with your two favorite white and red selections. The service was very attentive. Have fun here, don't be too serious. The ten course menu was more than enough.

Are you Kidding?

Anyone who is at all appreciative of inventive, exceptional food and wine need not dine at Moto. Everything was truly lacking. In addition, the wines were pedestrian at best. I will say the cigar was very creative in presentation, but thats it. The edible menu, although greasy, was decient. Yes, it was a memorable evening, an evening I felt my pocketbook was stolen.

We were still hungry

First thing, Moto is an experience and definitely a great experience! The food is innovative and unique and really gets your taste buds a workout! That being said, we had the 10-course meal and were still hungry. All 6 of us were still hungry. The staff was quite accomodating and brought us another course, but it still left us wanting more in terms of portion size. We were not expecting any type of Old Country Buffet, but definitely some more substance. I would recommend going to Moto, but would suggest the GTM selection.

Really different but enjoyed all of it!

We tried Moto yesterday on a whim and am glad we did. We tried a 5 course menu and actually ended up eating another 2. When it started with us eating our edible menu - I knew it was going to be a very different dinner! The only course we were not fond of was the scallop course - it was seared on the outside and served rare which is normal but just not our taste.

We will definitely be going back. My husband and I are real foodies so this type of food and 'tastes' are our Thing! Service was wonderful and very accomodating...

This place is a waste of time, literally!
By Food Dude from Oak Park, June 15, 2008

My wife and I went there for are anniversary and had the 20 coarse.

The food breaks down like this, 50% good and 50% not. The irony was, while the science stuff was (for the most part) really good, it was the basics that were the failure.
Ex.
Pork and apple: The pilled pork was dry and the apple was tough. The sauce was too sweet.
Potato dish: the baked potato ring was hard as a rock.
Road kill (apparently a signature dish): The duck was way too salty.

The presentation was fun though the plates that resemble the game ‘battle ship’ were distracting. I also thought that many of the garnishes were put on the plate to be cute and added nothing to the dishes taste.

The biggest problem we had was the service. It was like amateur night. No one was rude or unfriendly but empty plates were left on the table even as new dishes were being served. It took 20 minutes to get a beer. In fact, the server forgot the order altogether. Several times, we would both have empty glasses and a server would only take one of our drink orders. And oh the time. There was way too much time between courses. We were there 5 hours and still had 3 courses to go. We just skipped them and got the check. I’m not one of those guys who is in a rush to finish a meal. I believe there is a difference in time and timing. This was ridicules!

We both agreed that we would not go back. While the food was decent, it was not worth the $500 + we paid. And the service was lousy!

Spend your money elsewhere
By lawyerly from Oak Park, May 4, 2008

Moto was, as others have said, disappointing and over-rated. Moto's food and style is comparable to Schwa and Alinea: experimental. However, both Alinea and Schwa are better values. Alinea has superior service while Schwa is BYO beer/wine/alcohol/coffee/drinks. Moto is located in the Fulton Market area. If you go to Google and enter the address, then click on “Streetview” you will see that they are surrounded by meat packing plants/distributors (Fulton Market). When you step out of your car at the valet parking, the smell of rotten seafood and meat is in the air and washing down the gutters. The service is below average. The servers were all young, “green” and unprofessional. They cared more about trying to act casual, cool and artsy than aiming to please. It was similar service at Schwa, by the way. Anyone that says they had superior service at Moto must have never been to a 5 star restaurant or must have low expectations. When we are spending top dollar, we expect to be pampered and get royal, 5 star treatment as one would at any high class restaurant. Our server was unrefined, unkempt, unprofessional, and unpolished. She knew a lot about the wines and the food, but she had no poise or proper demeanor. My husband thought she might pull up a chair and sit down with us at one point. I don't care for someone who slaps their hands together and says, “OKayyyy, sooooooo . . . anyways. . . .” This place is more about the shock value or the "wow" factor with being different than actually being top in their field. Homer Simpson was on the "edible menu," along with some puns, and one of the entrees was made to look like its moniker, “road kill.” Not high class or appetizing. As the night progressed, our server was struck with sudden laryngitis. Instead of deferring to another server who could speak, she attempted to describe these unrecognizable courses in a faint whisper which no one could hear or understand. Though the website conveys an Asian theme, there was no Asian fusion in the food. It did not seem that the dishes were very well thought out, or that the use (over-use, really) of liquid nitrogen was meant for anything other than a circus show(taste was not the goal). For example, the pork & beans course was akin to a baby food puree poured through a funnel and frozen with - you guessed it- liquid nitrogen. It looked like a baked bean funnel cake and tasted like frozen, salty baby food. When they brought out pots of liquid nitrogen to serve us, a server was standing closely behind me with the pot of COLD liquid nitrogen steam which was icing my back (and my new dress!). When all is said and done, it feels like a rip off. They are making a killing in profits, I would imagine, because they obviously are not forking out a lot of money on a high rent neighborhood or hiring seasoned, polished servers, or serving portions larger than quarter-size. Anyways as you can guess, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Excellent accomadations for vegetarians
By ChgoFoodie from West Loop, March 6, 2008

I was taken to Moto for my birthday last night. I must say this is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at in my life. We had the 10-course meal....I am a vegetarian and special dishes were prepared for me. I eat at many vegan/vegetarian restaurants, and I must say I was totally blown away at what a wonderful job they did at making me such a delicious vegetarian meal. This place by far was 100% excellent! Service was extremely top notch, polite, quick, etc. The whole dining experience was so much fun and very interesting. I highly reccomend Moto.

Disappointed
By Foodluver from Logan Square, February 20, 2008

My co-workers went to dinner there on a Saturday night - was not impressed by the venue or the food. The service was not great either. For what we paid, it was not worth it. None of us would go back again. If you want to do this type of meal, I'd recommend Tru, much better food and service. Plus the ambiance is amazing.

the novelty of the cuisine drew us there, but we could not have been more disappointed. in fact, the more we think about it, the more upset we are that we spent 3 hours and 500 dollars on a terrile meal. this dining experience was the epitome of overrated.
