Named after the mascot of Southern Illinois University, Saluki's is SIU's unofficial Chicago alumni headquarters. The bar opened in 1989 on Ohio St. and relocated to this spot in the summer of 2003. Owners Fred and Hans sought to replicate a typical pub from Carbondale's Illinois Street. SIU bric-a-brac is plentiful: student identification cards are stuck to the walls alongside newspaper clippings updating SIU athletic achievements.
The dining room is separate from the bar, giving it a more elegant atmosphere. The varied menu, including daily specials, is served until midnight. Don't expect your typical bar food however: choices range from baked goat cheese to burgers to tilapia. .
