Maybe it's the soft-edged oil paintings of nude women hanging on the walls, but this looks like the kind of bar the man who reads Playboy would have hung out in in the 1960s, when the "singles bar" was a racy new idea. Interestingly enough, the man who founded Playboy, Hugh Hefner, used to come here back in those days, often arriving in his limousine. Now it's almost a living museum of the Near North singles scene. (Butch McGuire, the owner, claims to be the inventor of the Harvey Wallbanger, speaking of the '60s.) The bar is also well known for its holiday cheer; lavish decorations include a two-track model train display. Sentiment is big here. Since Butch's opened in the early 1960s, it has seen countless people meet, get married, raise families and come back for teary-eyed reunions.
