The Maple Tree Inn is like a trip to the Big Easy without the airfare. Located in a turn-of-the-century building that once housed Helen's Old Lantern Restaurant, it offers New Orleans-style cooking in a laid-back atmosphere. Just inside the swinging saloon doors into the main dining room there's a massive wooden bar complete with carved lions' heads. Appetizers include alligator sausage, oyster file gumbo and a salad made with sweet potatoes and spiced pecans. Entrees usually include spicy blackened jumbo sea scallops with brie sauce, crawfish etouffee and smoked pork chop with sun-dried sweet cherries and bourbon glaze. Charlie Orr, the restaurant's longtime owner, has but one request for diners: "Sit long, talk much." The bar serves 26 domestic and imported microbrewed beers on tap; the selection changes weekly.
