In the true spirit of a public house, this Elgin restaurant and bar welcomes locals for a hearty meal and plentiful drink. Starters range from peel-and-eat shrimp and boneless buffalo wings to fried pickles. The cobb salad here is beyond unique, with dried sweet corn, black-mission fig, pumpkin seeds and a choice of tuna, chicken or shrimp. Popular sandwiches include a meatloaf melt on sourdough, potato-crusted cod on ciabatta and pulled pork. Save some room for the deep-fried brownie bite sundae or turtle cheesecake. Added bonus: Nothing on the menu here exceeds $10.
Walk through the more formal front of the building and you'll find casual back area with dartboards and other bar games. Coming later this year is a wine and martini bar, which will be located upstairs of the main space. The menu of 40-plus martinis is already available, including the Blue Iris, Silver Cosmo and Red Devil.
