Basil's at the Talbot

Neighborhood: Gold Coast
20 E. Delaware Pl.

Chicago, IL 60611

Talbot Hotel owner Basil Kromelow has created a clubby atmosphere in the lounge half of this restaurant (brass horns and British-theme prints on mahogany-paneled walls, leather furniture). He found the mahogany bar--originally a bookcase--at an auction; its shelves are now home to bottles of wine and spirits. In the summer, glass-paneled doors open to outdoor seating, but guests can enjoy watching people go by on Delaware St. all year round. Leather-bound menus list light, traditional American fare. Basil's occasionally hosts live piano music; some guests may be lucky enough to catch a performance by singer Laureanne Lemay, Kromelow's wife. Vintage black-and-white photos of her grace the north wall of the restaurant.
