When my order arrived to my house (more than an hour after) I discovered that what I asked for was different than what the description of the roll was. I called them and the waiter was totally rude telling me that in every single Japanese restaurant they did Rainbow roll as he had send it to me. I told him I ordered that one according to the description and that I wanted what the description said regardless it's right name. He said his leaflet was incorrect but didn't offer to change it. After telling him that I was not going to throw to the trash $11.95 and that I wanted the right thing he HUNG UP the telephone!!! I called again, and told the guy that I wanted to talk to the manager and he HUNG UP AGAIN!!! My friend decided to help me and call them herself. A different guy answered and he said the manager was really busy and couldn't anwer us but that they were redoing the food and would send it.
While waiting for the new food to arrive (which they told us would take another hour) I opened my buffalo wings just to discover they send me fried chicken.
I wrote a letter the manager telling her that if they had any shame they would send me back the money I payed for those buffalo wings and for the tip (I gave beforehand) and that they, obviously, didn't deserve.
When the new food arrived I asked the delivery guy for the manager's name and told him to better give her my letter because tomorrow (when she's not busy) I'm going to call her and ask for my money back, and I gave him the incorrect food.
Can't believe they can't get a single thing right, and on top of that hanging up on clients!!!!
After reading all the negative reviews I learned my lesson. NEVER order again from a place without reading reviews first.
Report This ReviewNans has pretty good food that's cheap, and delivered quickly. However, don't order over Grub Hub. They screw it up, each and everytime. Although they redeliver the corrected order, it's kind of a bum deal, especially when you're hungry.
Report This ReviewI am neither critical nor write negative reviews about restaurant experiences regularly--especially as in this case when my expectation level was not high since it was a simple midweek night out. But this place was so bad in so many areas that it merits such a review. There were so many elements of this restaurant that were just wrong but I'll spare some of the minor ones.
The server seemed utterly incompetent, indifferent, and flustered. I asked a very simple question seeking a description of a menu item that seemed odd. He had no clue, and seemed to be making it up as he went along his clearly confused description. When I kindly asked for more clarity he went to the back to the kitchen and returned with nothing but whole jalapeƱo pepper in his hand and said that this was the dish (!?). And, no, it was not a language issue at all.
Both rolls we ordered were shockingly small, really poorly made (sloppy), and just bad. These basic rolls cost about half the price at any other neighborhood sushi restaurant. The sashimi tuna salad appetizer was fine but strangely didn't match the description on the menu at all. The miso soup was lukewarm, tasted tired and highly over salted.
We also ordered Chinese dish for variety--no big deal, just ginger chicken. We asked for it without MSG b/c of an allergy. The server openly had no idea what MSG is and acted totally flippant. When the dish came out it looked like no other ginger chicken I have ever seen in my life. Nonetheless, we tasted with an open mind. The result: hands down the worst Chinese dish I have had--bland, over salted and could hardly taste any ginger. Oh, and I ordered the small size, but received (and initially charged) for the large.
By the way, a table near us returned their soup as we overheard them say it was cold--and when one of their main dishes came out they swiftly returned it telling the server it was the wrong dish.
The server also noted to us at least three times that they close at 10:00 PM (we were seated and ordered at 9:25 PM!...and there were 5 other tables in the restaurant--three of which ordered after we did...
Atmosphere? it was freezing cold in the dining room; and they had rap music blaring in the background.
Bottom line, am I being too hard on this place. No, I am not. If the food was even average I would have easily tolerated the rest. And no, there is no way, that this was "just a bad night". How this place can survive amidst the fierce competition in Chicago is beyond me.
Deserves zero stars.
We wanted to try out a new Sushi place and came here on a Wednesday night. The overall experience was bad: The waiter couldn't answer any questions regarding the menu, the Sushi was less than average, the Miso soup was super salty and almost cold, and the Chinese dish that we ordered was the worst Chinese food ever. Even take-out places in the suburbs serve better Chinese food. Further, the waiter was super hectic, rushing around and dropping dishes. The best "joke" at the end was that they added an 18% service charge for our party of 2!!! This was by far my worst dining experience ever in Chicago.
Report This ReviewMy girlfriend and I will definitely be coming back to Nan's. I can only comment on their sushi, but what we had was great (their volcano roll may be my favorite ever) and moderately priced. The chefs took care of us quickly, even though there were several large groups there at the same time.
That being said, I love food, and maybe I'm easy to please. I could go to many places for good food. This is why I value decor and mood, and Nan's succeeds here as well. It's a small place, and the rich reds and subtle lighting strike a nice balance between the cold minimalism some Japanese restaurants seem to prefer and the cluttered feeling some Asian places fall into.
Plus, it's BYOB.
Report This ReviewOrdered Nan's today. Cold food, bad service, rude employees, dirty establishment. Pass this one by!
Report This ReviewFood was ice cold by the time it arrived, and the rice seemed like it had been sat under a heat lamp for hours. Do not order from here.
Report This ReviewOh, Note to self: Never order late night chinese food. Everything I ordered left something to be desired. But that one night I just really wanted some chinese food, and nothing was open but Nan's. My Chicken and Peapods had a fishy taste to it. The egg rolls also had an off taste... I couldn't exactly decide what it was. They also charged me an extra $3 for apparently living out of their ordering range? I checked online to see what their delivery parameter was... and I fell inside it, but still the mystery $3 charge. After reading the reviews here I figured it pointless to call and question about it.... I'll just chalk it up to "Im smarter now." The chinese from here was so bad that the very next day I had to run out and get some Young's, just to make the world right.
