Best wings in Chicago

Jay Cutler may not have gotten the 2009 Bears off to a stellar start, but our Sept. 9 “Wing nuts” article and week-long online poll to name the best wings in Chicago sure made for a strong kickoff to wings season.

In addition to the 16 spots highlighted in the story, we received write-ins for other contenders, including Bird’s Nest, Buffalo Wild Wings and Weather Mark Tavern. And though we limited the competition to wing-slinging spots within city limits, comments streamed in supporting suburban spots such as Buffalo Joe’s in Evanston and Gators Wing Shack in Palatine and Waukegan.

Several spots sprung into action to campaign for votes and ended up as front-runners. First place went to the Fifty/50, which took to the Twittersphere to encourage fans to vote for their wings, spiced with house-made hot sauce. Second-place winners Buffalo Wings & Rings in Bridgeport even set up laptops for customers to cast post-meal votes. Streeterville spot Timothy O’Toole’s came in third—not surprising, considering they took first place in the hot category at Wing Fest 2009.
