i went with a close friend to celebrate a promotion. we had heard great things, but our experience didn't measure up to the hype. we went on a rather slow night (no biggie) and were seated at a spacious booth. the wine selection seemed fair, i caught a wine that i was familiar with and asked for it by its full name. the waitress didn't know what i was talking about, when i pointed to the name she said "oh yeah, the merlot." i was rather surprised a waitress wouldn't be familiar with her own menu. i ordered a steak, medium rare. my friend ordered a pork chop dish of sorts. we waited about 15 minutes for our risotto (which was divine) only to wait an additional 40 (yes 40) minutes for our entrees. my friend and i looked at one another a few times, somewhat alarmed. on such a slow night (only 2 or 3 tables in addition to ours), why was our food taking so long? we wanted to speak with the waitress, but she was no where to be found. periodically, i would catch her sneaking a glimpse at my table, as if to ensure we hadn't walked out. regardless of the time, the food EVENTUALLY made its way. only, my steak came back well done (even though i ordered medium rare and the waitress had recited the order back to me), which explained our long wait time. i was so hungry i wasn't in a mood to fuss, so i drowned it in a-1 steak sauce (a cardinal sin of mine) and went on my merry way.
i enjoy going out. i enjoy great food and great service. i understand that, at times, there are lapses in service. however, i don't feel i should pay the price. my waitress knew exactly how we felt. she knew something was wrong and she didn't acknowledge it. if jacks feels this waitress is the standard, then i don't want to waste my time and money here again.

Great food, cold service

Went on a Saturday night for dinner. The food was great, we had a great Caesar salad to start, steak and seafood for dinner. What wasn't great was the friendliness of the staff. From the hostess to our server, they were just seemed unfriendly and cold for the duration of the evening. All-in-all, the food was very, very good, but the service just wasn't there. I'd still recommend it though.

Just visited Jacks

My date and I visited Jacks recently before a performance of the Blue Man Group. Jacks food is absolutely great and they had the best glass of red wine I had ever tasted. However it was way too noisy and my date and I had to just about yell to talk to each other. The service was also very very slow and after asking for the check three times I finally went up to the hostess and told her we had to leave because we were now twenty minutes late for the show and we needed the check. My date also had noticed that there were people seated 20-30 minutes after us that had gotten their food well before us. I would not go there again mainly because when I go somewhere to eat I want to be able to talk with my date and would like better service overall.

A pleasant surprise!

After we all showed up late for our reservation ( and fearing the worst - that we would now have to wait a long time to be seated), we were seated immediately and were taken excellent care of - what a pleasure it was to dine at Jack's on a Friday night!
The service was great, and the food even better! The ceasar salad was superb, and we all loved our dinners. We will most definitely be heading back to Jack's in the future.

Just a little note regarding the last review made on July 27 regarding the service being rude and pretentious, I disagree with that comment. In fact, I have been going to Jack's over five years, and the bartender and service is anything but rude and pretentious. In reality, it is one of the friendliest and best service provided as a neighborhood bar/restaurant in the city

Avoid this place! Not only was the service rude and pretentious, but the food was mediocre and over-priced. I've never felt so rushed out of a restaurant before. The salad I got had a nice flavor to it, but was drenched in dressing. Also my seafood pasta was bland and the sauce, watery. The only good thing about this place is the atomsphere..

This restaurant is a must visit for anyone. The menu is well rounded but not long and the food is consistently superior. Service, atmosphere and drinks are wonderful. A great launching point for the Halsted strip!

Stopped in last night for a drink and bite to eat. While the place was busy our bartender was great. We had an amazing Trio of Salmon app and one of the best martinis I've had in a while. Highly recommend!

Do yourself a favor, do not dine at this restaurant. The food was nothing special, service was horrible and pretentious. I don't know how this restaurant stays in business!
