Whether you need to frame something or just want to browse, Heritage Gallery offers an eclectic, colorful and ever-changing collection of art work. In terms of original works, owner/artist-in-residence Jack Simmerling specializes in several different styles. His first specialty is pen-and-ink drawings of Chicago landmarks--from the Water Tower to Comiskey Park--and famous neighborhood sites--from the historic Givins Irish Castle to Christ the King Church. Simmerling's many trips to his ancestral Ireland have inspired numerous original water-color scenes of the Emerald Isle, and the shop features a separate section for Irish-themed art. An array of other artists' work, generally in the form of prints, also is available. As for custom framing, Heritage Gallery is more expensive than do-it-yourself places, but the quality and workmanship are excellent. (Tip for historians: If Simmerling is not too busy, ask him about his collection of wood mantels salvaged from early Chicago mansions. As a youth, his job was to take them out and burn them, but several were saved.)
