Taller Mestizarte takes its name from the Spanish words "taller," which means workshop; "mestizo," the fusion of pre-Columbian and Spanish culture; and "arte," or art. It's a collective that promotes work by Latino artists from the U.S. and abroad. Taller is located in the very heart of the Pilsen neighborhood, home to many of Chicago's Latino artists. Its stone facade and arched doorway make it look and feel like a school, but a glance inside reveals a large room that is often transformed from studio to gallery space to classroom and back to studio again. Artists who join the collective (for a yearly fee) can use the studio space for their own projects. Most of the work showcased at Mestizarte is prints, although painters, sculptors and video artists also show their work here. Taller offers a wide range of workshops in printmaking, painting and other media. Cultural tours of the Pilsen neighborhood led by local artists are also available.
