The Aurora Historical Society museum, once the home of a leading businessman of the city, William Tanner, depicts a slice of life along the Fox River in the mid-1800s -- with furnishings, toys, clothing and other artifacts from the period. The carriage house provides a glimpse into the social history of the Victorian era, when getting around town in style was just as important to prominent townspeople as it is today. Many exhibits of the historical society were recently moved to an annex at the old Ginsberg Building, 18-20 E. Downer Pl., an old department store downtown. Artifacts in the society's collection include something completely unexpected: mastodon bones.
