The Bronzeville Children's Museum, the only African-American children's museum in the country, is named for the area between 26th and 51st and Wentworth and Cottage Grove, where African-Americans first settled in Chicago. Originally from the South, the black settlers created a booming retail and residential center known as Bronzeville. Located on the lower level of Evergreen Plaza, the 1,275-square-foot museum celebrates famous African-Americans with interactive exhibits that involve kid-pleasing magnetic maps, movies, craft tables, video games and toys. A single exhibit runs at a time; subjects have included George Washington Carver, aviation and the Old West. Group tours, which last between 45 minutes and an hour, can be scheduled by appointment.
