Much of the museum's fine arts collection came from the Polish Pavilion at the 1933 Century of Progress World's Fair. Paintings include examples of Post-Impressionism and Constructivism, movements that were brewing in Poland at that time. Also on display are several huge paintings of Polish battle scenes, which came to the museum after they were discovered in a New York warehouse in the wake of World War II. The museum, housed in the Polish Roman Catholic Union, mounts frequent new exhibits of work by contemporary artists from Poland. The museum also has a collection of historical maps that tell the history of the motherland and military artifacts from World War I and World War II, mostly brought to Chicago by immigrants who fought for Poland. The collection of photos, "Old Polish Chicago,'' documenting the community from the late 19th Century to the present, recently made a tour of Europe. The museum's library, with English and Polish titles in history and literature, is one of the most significant Polish libraries in the United States.
